History
In 2017, Glossier introduced Cloud Paint, which quickly became a must-have for beauty enthusiasts. The inspiration came from paint tubes sold at a nearby art supply store, Blick Art Supply, close to Glossier’s original office. People loved Cloud Paint for a few reasons. Firstly, its packaging was cute and innovative. Secondly, it filled a gap in the market because there weren’t many liquid blushes like it. It wasn’t quite a gel or a watery stain, nor was it a traditional cream. The unique texture, along with its rich color and easy-to-use formula, made it stand out and gain popularity fast.
Right after Cloud Paint was released, and especially in the years that followed, fans started asking for a bronzer version of the beloved formula. While some shades could work as bronzers for certain skin tones, there weren’t any true bronze shades available. Interestingly, Emily Weiss revealed at a launch event that the idea for a bronzer extension of Cloud Paint didn’t come from Glossier itself; it was a direct request from the community. This demand grew even more apparent after Glossier’s previous bronzer, Solar Paint, was discontinued quietly.
So, Emily Weiss and her team started working on creating five new bronzing shades. Their goal was to help everyone achieve a natural glow, rather than looking overly tan or bronze. They wanted people to have that beautiful golden hour glow on their skin, no matter the time or place. Emily described it as a “lit from within glow.”

The five new shades include Drift, which is a deep neutral bronze, Coast, a classic golden bronze, Swept, a medium neutral tan, Dune, a golden tan, and Sail, the lightest shade offering a light neutral tan. It’s important not to confuse Sail with Dusk, which is a brownish nude blush shade already available in Glossier’s lineup.
